Prior to the implementation of the project, energy in the Cape Verdean electrical grid was mainly generated by using fossil fuels.

The conventional method produces significant amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) that are known to induce the climate change phenomenon.

Because wind energy does not cause emissions of gases such as GHGs, this type of energy generation plays a central role in the fight against climate change by reducing the CO2 emissions that would be produced by conventional electricity generation.

Over the entire life of the wind farms, Cabeólica thus aims to substantially reduce GHG emissions in the country and it is estimated that they will save about 55,000 tons of CO2 for each full year of operation. In the global effort to stop climate change, CO2 reductions resulting from the company's activities help Cape Verde, as a country, to align with its responsibilities related to sustainable development.
