Before the implementation of the project, the energy in the Cape Verdean electricity grid was generated mainly by the use of fossil fuels. The conventional method produces significant amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) that are known to induce the phenomenon of climate change.

As wind energy does not cause the emission of greenhouse gases, this type of energy production plays a central role in the fight against climate change through the reduction in the CO2 emissions that would be produced by conventional electricity generation.
Over the course of the wind farms’ life cycle, Cabeolica thus aims to substantially reduce greenhouse gases in the country, estimating that the emission of some 55,000 tons of CO2 will be avoided for every full year of operation. In the global effort to halt climate change, the reduction in CO2 resulting from the company’s activities help Cabo Verde, as a country, meet its responsibilities related to sustainable development.
