Cabe\u00f3lica, a wind energy company in Cape Verde, is pleased to announce that it has joined the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a mechanism created by the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on (UNFCCC \u2013 United Nations Framework on Climate Change), to\u00a0<\/span>help the process of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the\u00a0<\/span>fight against climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a rigorous validation process, the United Nations registered the project that produces clean energy, which avoids the emission of greenhouse gases. \u201cCae\u00f3lica and Cape Verde are proud to integrate this project into the CDM due to the importance of this Framework Convention and the worldwide recognition of the clean energy we produce\u201d says Ant\u00e3o Fortes, CEO of Cabe\u00f3lica.<\/p>\n

Cabe\u00f3lica has 4 Wind Farms with an installed capacity of 25.5 MW, generating more than a fifth of the electricity consumed on the main islands, and which avoids the production of around 60,000 tons of greenhouse gases per year, in addition to contributing to the reduction fuel import needs.<\/p>\n

The United Nations launched the CDM in February 2001 with the aim of mitigating global climate change. This mechanism allows projects aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases in developed countries to receive Certified Emission Reduction credits (CER - Certified Emission Reduction) that can be sold or purchased so that each country contributes to achieving the targets defined by the Kyoto Protocol.<\/p>\n
